What is Keiki Paste and how does it work?

Keiki Paste is a plant growth hormone specifically designed to promote the development of new offshoots or 'keikis' in orchids and other plants. It works by mimicking the naturally occurring growth hormones that plants produce. When applied to healthy nodes or resting buds, it stimulates cell division and encourages the growth of new shoots or roots. It's particularly beneficial for propagation, allowing gardeners to propagate orchid plants much faster than traditional methods.

How do I apply Keiki Paste to my plants?

To apply Keiki Paste, begin by sterilizing your tools to prevent any infection. Using a small stick or a cotton swab, apply a thin layer of the paste directly to the desired spot on the plant, typically a node or bud. It's important to use only a small amount so you don't overwhelm the plant. Generally, you should see results within a few weeks, with keikis starting to develop. This method is commonly used by orchid enthusiasts as it can yield multiple new plants from a single parent plant.

Can I use Keiki Paste on all types of plants?

While Keiki Paste is most commonly used for orchids, it can also be effective on other epiphytic plants and some terrestrial species. However, it's not suitable for all plants, and care should be taken to research which species can respond positively to the hormones in the paste. Always check the specific needs and growth patterns of your plants to gauge whether Keiki Paste is an appropriate solution. You might want to experiment on a smaller scale first before applying it to more valuable specimens.

When is the best time to use Keiki Paste?

The best time to use Keiki Paste is during the growing season when plants are actively developing and can respond well to growth hormones. For orchids, this usually coincides with warmer weather when they are typically thriving. Applying the paste during dormancy can result in minimal to no growth results. Monitoring your plant's growth cycle will optimize your timing and increase the likelihood of successful propagation.

How long does it take for the Keiki to develop after application?

After applying Keiki Paste, it generally takes a few weeks for visible growth to appear. The exact time frame can depend on several factors, including the type of plant, environmental conditions, and overall plant health. In ideal conditions, you may observe the formation of roots or shoots within 2 to 6 weeks. Providing adequate light, humidity, and temperature can enhance growth rates and improve the success of keikis.

Are there any side effects of using Keiki Paste?

While Keiki Paste is safe for most plants when used as directed, over-application can lead to unwanted growth or stress in the plant. Care should be taken to apply only a small amount to the selected area. Additionally, using it on unhealthy or stressed plants may not yield positive results. Always monitor your plant’s response after application and adjust your methods accordingly to ensure healthy growth.

How do I store Keiki Paste?

Keiki Paste should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Make sure the container is tightly closed to prevent any contamination or drying out of the paste. Proper storage is essential to maintain the efficacy of the hormones in the paste. When adequately stored, Keiki Paste can be used multiple times, making it economical for plant enthusiasts who frequently propagate plants.

Can Keiki Paste be used on blooming orchids?

Yes, Keiki Paste can be used on blooming orchids. In fact, applying it during the blooming phase can sometimes encourage healthy keiki development without interfering with the blooming process. Care should be taken not to apply it excessively, as this may stress the plant. Many orchid growers take advantage of this time to promote more growth while still enjoying the beauty of their flowering plants.

What plants can benefit from using Keiki Paste aside from orchids?

Besides orchids, plants like some succulents and bromeliads can also benefit from Keiki Paste. These plants can utilize the hormones to develop offsets or pups more quickly than they would naturally. Additionally, certain tropical plants with similar growth patterns may respond positively. Researching specific species and their compatibility with Keiki Paste will help expand your propagation efforts across various plant types.
