Coming of Age Editorial Review
**** Andrea Hirata's autobiographical novel offers an engaging perspective on the lives of impoverished children growing up in a small village on the Indonesian island of Belitong (Billiton). The narrative follows a group of ten students at a Muhammadiya school, where the stakes are high: if they fail to enroll enough students, their school faces closure. The writer masterfully balances humor with poignant observations, delivering a narrative that avoids sentimentality while still capturing the essence of hope and resilience among the children. The book shines a light on the harsh realities of life in the tin mining industry, juxtaposed with the children's aspirations for education. Rather than romanticizing poverty, Hirata presents a candid portrayal of these children's struggles yet also emphasizes their strong sense of fortune amid adversity. The characters are vividly described—each with their unique traits and stories, from the artistic Mahar to the brilliant Lintang, adding texture to the narrative. Additionally, the book is enriched by Hirata's exploration of social history, weaving in elements of colonialism and cultural superstition that define the islanders' existence. Through the lens of childhood, readers are treated to a thorough understanding of how education can become a means of rebellion against societal Constraints. Overall, the novel is not just a story about overcoming external challenges; it celebrates the indomitable spirit of youth, the importance of education, and the bonds that form in the quest for knowledge and better opportunities in life. The writing is engaging, the characters engaging and relatable, and the humor sprinkled throughout makes what could be a heavy topic remarkably uplifting. This book is a commendable introduction to the life and culture of a corner of Indonesia rarely seen by outsiders, making it a worthwhile read. **
