Can I add brackets to make the shelf more sturdy?
Answer: Yes but you’ll lose the floating shelf look and there are lower cost bracket shelves. These are not worth the price. -

My studs are 16 inches apart. How far apart are the screw holes on the bracket? I really need both screws in a stud!

Answer: This shelf is made of engineered wood ,not real solid wood. and it's color closer to the coffee beans color, darker than a walnut color. more gloss than matte, not reflective. Hope the anwer can help you.
