Nutritionist's Take
Polysorbate 80, a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier, is commonly used in food processing, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. While it aids in mixing oil and water to create stable emulsions, nutritionists often express caution regarding its potential health implications. Some studies have suggested that excessive consumption of polysorbate 80 may disrupt gut microbiota and contribute to inflammation, raising concerns about its long-term effects on health. Additionally, as an additive, it does not provide any nutritional benefits; rather, it functions solely as a processing agent. For those with dietary restrictions or preferences, such as vegans or individuals seeking clean-label products, polysorbate 80 might be unsuitable. Overall, while it is deemed safe by regulatory bodies at specified levels, consumers should monitor their intake and consider healthier, more natural alternatives whenever possible.
