Golden Age Project Ribbon Microphones R1ACTIVEMK3 Editorial Review
The Golden Age Project R1 Active MKIII Active Ribbon Microphone is a natural-sounding microphone with strong low-end response that is useful for instruments with sharp attacks. However, the lack of a shock mount and excessive self-noise can make it difficult to use for intimate and acoustic recordings. EQ can be used to brighten the sound and reduce sibilance, but none of the condenser microphones that were compared to the GAP R1 could replicate the smooth and natural sound of the ribbon. The build quality is worse than expected, with a painted body and cheap, flimsy knobs. The microphone ships in a thin cardboard box with protective foam.
