What are the Poxwalkers in Warhammer 40,000?

Poxwalkers are a type of undead unit within the Death Guard faction of Warhammer 40,000. They represent the grotesque, plague-infested followers of Nurgle, the Chaos God of decay. Each Poxwalker is once a living human but has been transformed through the contagions of Nurgle, turning them into shambling zombies, embodying the inevitable physical deterioration wrought by the warp. Players use them as a frontline unit, absorbing damage and creating a barrier for tougher characters in the Death Guard army.

How do I effectively use Poxwalkers in my Warhammer 40,000 army?

Poxwalkers excel in roles that require them to serve as a shield for more powerful units. By placing them at the frontline, they can soak up enemy fire and protect your valuable characters and objectives. Their unique ability to resurrect some of their fallen as long as certain conditions are met allows you to sustain longer engagements. Positioning them in terrain that provides cover enhances their survivability, effectively supporting your main strategies during gameplay.

Are Poxwalkers viable in competitive play?

Yes, Poxwalkers can be quite viable in competitive play, especially when used strategically. Their low point cost combined with the ability to maintain numbers through special rules makes them a valuable option for filling out your army roster. They can hinder your opponent's movements and capture objectives, making them a flexible choice in many tactical scenarios. Their synergy with other Death Guard units, which capitalize on a slower, attrition-based playstyle, can turn the tides in challenging matchups.

What models are included in the Death Guard: Poxwalkers box?

The Death Guard: Poxwalkers box typically includes a set of multiple finely detailed miniatures representing Poxwalkers, each with unique poses and designs reflecting their plague-ridden essence. These miniatures come unassembled and unpainted, allowing hobbyists to customize and personalize them according to their preferred aesthetic. The box often includes bases for each miniature and an assembly guide to assist with building. This makes the kit an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced modellers looking to expand their Death Guard collection.

Can I customize the Poxwalker models?

Absolutely, customization is a key aspect of the hobby. The Poxwalker models can be assembled in a variety of ways to reflect your unique vision. You can modify limbs, swap components from other kits, or add personalized paint schemes to make your army stand out. Additionally, hobby supplies such as green stuff can be used to sculpt additional features. This creativity not only enhances your gaming experience but also makes your collection truly unique in showcases or battlefields.

What is the backstory of Poxwalkers in the Warhammer 40,000 lore?

In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Poxwalkers were once individuals who succumbed to Nurgle's insidious gifts, becoming living manifestations of pestilence. Each one carries a fragment of their past, but is driven by the hunger to spread disease and chaos, representing Nurgle's will on the material plane. The lore emphasizes themes of decay and rebirth, making them a significant part of the Death Guard narrative, which revolves around the relentless advance of entropy and oblivion in the universe.

What is the best way to paint Poxwalkers?

Painting Poxwalkers can be an enjoyable experience, especially when focusing on their unique textures and disturbing aesthetics. Start with a base color that captures decay, such as a dark green or gray. Layering techniques using washes can enhance depth and create a grimy finish. Use a dry brushing technique to highlight raised areas, mimicking the rot and decay associated with Nurgle's followers. Adding details like gore or tint effects can elevate your models, creating an eerie and compelling visual for your army.

How do Poxwalkers interact with other units in the Death Guard army?

Poxwalkers cooperate seamlessly with other Death Guard units, particularly those that benefit from their presence in combat. They are particularly effective when paired with heavy hitters like Plague Marines, as the Poxwalkers can absorb enemy attacks while the Marines dish out damage. Their ability to resurrect enhances combined arms tactics, allowing them to engage in prolonged fights. This synergy makes them not only a tactical unit but also a significant element in terms of battlefield control and resource allocation.

Games Workshop Figure Kits 43-76 Editorial Review

The GW 40k Death Guard Poxwalkers is a great addition to any Death Guard army. The models come in good condition with the sprue featuring partial plague marines, which is perfect for creating test miniatures for finalising the paint job. The set is great value as it also includes a set of legs, torso, and head for a Plague Marine. While it is not mentioned anywhere on the box or online, the extra pieces allow you to create an extra Poxwalker or even do some kitbashing to make unique miniatures. The only downside is that the models were nerfed a week after one customer purchased them.
